In 2008, the famed director Michel Gondry ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Green Hornet," "You'll Like This Film Because You're In It") wrote to legendary cartoonist Julie Doucet (of "My New York Diary" fame) to propose that they make a film together. Little did Gondry and Doucet know that the process itself would be the film, and they'd soon be starring in a "reality" comic and film of their own devising. They settled on a process that involved inserting the "real" Julie into a landscape of her own drawings. the concept is original. You have 2 ways to know the story. 1/ you read the book and you watch the movie or vice and versa.The movie, is with the drawing, and a real human being.Bt the story by itself I think, it is weak Shy and egomaniac, discreet and self-obsessed at once. The lady indie cartoonist. Um, yeah, Gondry's right (though I'm not sure he was referring to Doucet). This was a really interesting, and surprisingly simple experiment -- a film of cartoon stills with live-action living breathing Julie (who's regular-person cute and shockingly normal... OMG- I just read My New York Diary last night. Little did I know that one of the most visually imaginative directors ever was making a short film out of it (!?!) The original graphic novel was great (not listed on here..) and I canNOT wait to see this DVD/book combo!
