I didn't know that the flags of four different nations flew over Michigan: France, Spain, England, and the... "Perhaps there was a dim awareness that the industrial age was about to break out of this wild, desolate, uninhabitable wilderness-wholly incongruous, as if Etienne Brule shoud step up to shake hands with Henry Ford. Once again, what modern America had to have in unstinted plenty was waiting here in an abundance beyond anyone's dreams.... I rarely enjoy a book as much as I enjoyed this one. Perhaps his insights come from the time I was growing up that I found them so moving and powerful. I can recommend this book to anyone interested in history. Which should be everyone. It can give you a new lens with which to view the present.
